Counterfeit: “Into the Word” Week 30

Cheap imitations abound today.  My pastor likes to tell the story of a watch he bought years ago in front of a convenience store.  The seller told him it was name brand, but when the watch stopped working a few weeks later, he learned a hard lesson.  You get what you pay for.

This week while I was digging  “Into the Word,” I was reminded that this fact is especially true in the spiritual realm.  Christ is the way, the truth, and the life — no other cheap substitutes will do.  The Epistle of Jude warns us about this scam happening in our churches and gives us marching orders to defend ourselves from deception:

But you, my dear friends, must remember

what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ said.

They told you that in the last times

there would be scoffers whose purpose

in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires.

These people are the ones

who are creating divisions among you.

They follow their natural instincts

because they do not have God’s Spirit in them.

But you, dear friends, must build

each other up in your most holy faith,

pray in the power of the Holy Spirit,

and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who will bring you eternal life.

In this way, you will keep yourselves

safe in God’s love (vs. 17-21, MSG).

I love it that God gives us a sound game plan here to deal with the counterfeits in our midst — build each other up, pray in the Spirit, keep your heart focused on the eternal reward ahead.  Division in the church is a red flag that something is amiss.  By heeding these guidelines, we can avoid being suckered into a cheap imitation and stand firm in our faith.

Q4U:  Have you ever spotted a counterfeit?  How do you avoid being mislead by cheap imitations of the Gospel?

Every Monday we will be working our way through Anne Graham Lotz’s 52-week study “Into the Word.”    Hop on over to the 3dLessons4Life Blog Facebook Page to join us as we dig into God’s Word together.

  1. I’ve been thinking about this very concept a lot lately. The thing is…if I am not following that formula…if I am not tucking deeper and deeper into Jesus…I’m going to fall prey to some counterfeit. Good thoughts, L.
