Life Saver: “Into the Word” Week 20

A couple of days after my surgery, the Gospel-singing LPN returned.   Her theme on this day was Psalm 121.  I thanked her for her musical ministry as tears welled up in my eyes.  God had once again sent her to sing exactly what I needed to hear:  “My Help comes from the Lord.”

Since that day, the image of God as my Help keeps popping up off the pages of my Bible — comforting me, assuring me, surrounding me with the reminder that God is my Life Saver.  This week, as I was digging “Into the Word,” I discovered Hebrews 13:6:

Therefore, we may boldly say:

The Lord is my Helper;

I will not be afraid.

What can man do to me?

The word “help” in  the original Greek implies “bringing aid at the right time to meet an urgent, real need.”  I need not worry because God, my Help is present and able to meet any need that may arise.  What urgent need are you facing this week?  Let me assure you, God is your Life Saver.  Hang on to Him.

Q4U:  How has God been a “Helper” to you?

Every Monday we will be working our way through Anne Graham Lotz’s 52-week study “Into the Word.”    Hop on over to the 3dLessons4Life Blog Facebook Page to join us as we dig into God’s Word together.

Verse 8: Hiding 20 in 2012 Scripture Memory Challenge

My good friend, Lolita, took a seed packet that she got for free, threw it in a pot, and now she has a lovely basil plant out on her pack porch.  I must admit that I am jealous.  Fresh herbs add so much to a meal, but I am such a terrible gardener — I forget to water, and my plants end up dry and dead.

In his book Scripture by Heart: Devotional Practices for Memorizing God’s Word, Joshua Choonmin Kang explains how we need to be spiritual gardeners:

Memorizing Scripture is like planting seeds

in the garden of our heart…

By constant cultivation you become well aware

of the interior of your being,

so the affection of the heart

can also be attended (p. 43).

How about you?  Are you cultivating your heart’s affections with the seed of God’s Word? Let’s hold each other accountable by Hiding 20 in 2012.  In the comment section below, write out the verse you will be working on for the next two weeks. Make sure to include your first name, your home state, the verse’s address/location, and the Bible translation:

Lyli from Florida:

“Serve the Lord with gladness

Come before Him with joyful songs.”

Psalms 100:2 (ESV)

Here’s a little play on words for all you Pinterest Fans. Rather than ‘Pin it,” let’s purpose to “Hide it.” I will end each post with a “Hide it” Suggested Verse.

“Hide it”:

“Whatever you have learned

or received or heard from me, or seen in me—

put it into practice.

And the God of peace will be with you.”

Philippians 4:9 (NIV)

Seeking Him More: “Into the Word” Week 19

I am weak and unable to do just about anything this week without taking a nap afterward.  Eating a meal has become a battleground.  Recovery is going to be a long process.  As I look toward tomorrow, I am crying out to God for His help.  I need Him desperately.   How do people make it without Him?  I have no idea.  Connecting to Christ is the only thing that makes my life function and have purpose.

Yesterday, as I was digging “Into the Word,” Jeremiah 10:21 jumped off of the page and gave me an important message to remember:

For the shepherds have become dull-hearted,
And have not sought the Lord;
Therefore they shall not prosper,
And all their flocks shall be scattered.

Right now, I am dependent.  I don’t want to forget this feeling — this need to be supported, filled, and directed.  One day soon, I will be back to normal physically, but I hope I will stay rooted in Him, rather than self-sufficient and hollow.  I want to always seek Him more.  How about you?
